Candace Maracle

Candace Maracle: is Wolf Clan from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. An award-winning filmmaker and journalist, she graduated with her master’s degree in journalism from Ryerson University where she received the CanWest Scholarship for Aboriginal Youth in Broadcast Journalism. Her work as a journalist includes reporting for the APTN’s National News and producing for CBC Radio’s “The Current” and “As It Happens.” Her first documentary, “The Creator’s Game: The Quest for Gold and the Fight for Nationhood” addresses the issue of Indigenous sovereignty through the game of lacrosse and has been broadcast around the world.

She studies Kenienké’ha, her native tongue and an endangered language, so that she can use it in her work. Her penultimate documentary, “The Grandfather of All Treaties,” premiered at the 2015 imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival to a sold-out audience and is used in curriculums across Canada. In 2017, she was an honoured laureate of The Hnatyshyn Foundation REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. Her latest documentary, "Yakonhéhkwen (It Sustains Her)” a an uplifting triumph of one woman's journey from suicide to healing thorough her traditional Iroquoian art form. It has screened at numerous film festivals across Turtle Island and was nominated at the Red Nation International Film Festival 2020 in L.A.
