Daniel H. Dugas
Daniel H. Dugas is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar. His practice includes video, photo, interactivity, audio, music, graphic design and writing and seeks to address social and political issues. Ecology, technology and the shifting boundaries of life are themes often explored in his work.
He has participated in festivals and literary events as well exhibitions and performances in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, and Australia. He was an artist in residence at the Banff Centre, in both in the Visual Arts and in the Music Department; Sculpture Space, New York; EMMEDIA, Calgary; A.I.R. Vallauris, France; Visiting Scholar, Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney, Australia and more recently a Fellow at the Everglades National Park, Florida. Daniel has received numerous grants and awards from several Arts Boards in Canada, including grants from four different departments of the Canada Council for the Arts: Interdisciplinary, Writing, Media Arts and Visual Arts; as well as the New Brunswick Arts Board, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and The Alberta College of Art + Design where he was Faculty in the Media Arts + Digital Technologies Department. In 2005 he was included in the CCCA’s Canadian Art Database and later in 2009, in the Fringe Online project, a co-presentation of Vtape and the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre.
His eighth publication, a poetic essay, Des Ravins au bout des lèvres, was published in April 2014 through Éditions Prise de parole, Ontario, Canada. Daniel’s work has also been published, in French and English literary magazines including: JUiCYHEADS, the New York-based e-zine; Mot Dit, Ottawa, Ontario; Revue Ancrages, Moncton, New Brunswick; Revue Sources, Namur, Belgium; Revue Le Quai des lettres, La Rochelle, France and in the Paris-based literary arts magazine: Her Royal Majesty.
Daniel H. Dugas was a founding member of IMAGO, the artist run print shop, Moncton, NB; TRUNK© Gallery, an alternative exhibition space and EMMAX, a Max /MSP Jitter software based club hosted by EMMEDIA, Calgary, AB.
In July, 2014 Daniel Dugas and Valerie LeBlanc were invited by the Everglades National Park as AIRIE Fellows. As a result of their residency they were invited by AIRIE to participate in the prestigious Miami Book Fair International in November. Under the project title FLOW: BIG WATERS, they presented a series of video poems based on their research. Daniel also took part in a panel discussion on the intersections of art and science. In March 2015, Dugas is scheduled to take part in AnthropoScene: Art and Nature in a Manufactured Era at the University of Miami, March 2015. More details about the exhibition / workshop / panel discussion will be released closer to the events.
Daniel has lived in many locations while pursuing his multi-facetted career. The list includes: Calgary, Chicago, Montreal, Banff and Sydney, AU. He currently resides in Moncton, NB.
