ISUMA

Isuma Distribution International Inc. (Igloolik Isuma Productions, Inc. at the time) was incorporated in January 1990 as Canada's first Inuit independent production company. Isuma is 75% Inuit-owned. The founding shareholders are Zacharias Kunuk (President), Paul Apak Angilirq (Vice-President), Pauloosie Qulitalik (Chairman), and Norman Cohn (Secretary-Treasurer). Paul Apak passed away in December 1998. Isuma’s headquarters are in Igloolik, Nunavut, with a southern office in Montreal and international representation in New York.

Isuma's mission is to produce independent community-based media – films, TV and new media - to preserve and enhance Inuit culture and language; to create jobs and economic development in Igloolik and Nunavut; and to tell authentic Inuit stories to Inuit and non-Inuit audiences worldwide.

IsumaTV is an independent online interactive network of Inuit and Indigenous multimedia. IsumaTV uses the power and immediacy of the Web to bring people together to tell stories and support change.

Our tools enable Indigenous people to express reality in their own voices: views of the past, anxieties about the present and hopes for a more decent and honorable future. Our goal is to recognize and respect diverse ways of experiencing our world, and honor those differences as a human strength.

IsumaTV uses new networking technology to build a new era of communication and exchange among Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and communities around the globe.

Digital Indigenous Democracy (2012-14), the CMF Experimental Fund $1M project to support multimedia "Inform and Consult" by Inuit in the 2012 Baffinland Iron Mine environmental impact hearings. DID was produced by Isuma Distribution International and was the artistic subject of the 2015 film, Attatama Nunanga: My Father's Land, co-directed by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn.

DID produced 22 call-in radio shows and about 50 video interviews about mining that were introduced as a Formal Intervention into the 2012 Final Public Hearings and uploaded to the DID website www.isuma.ca/DID/humanrights.
