France Queyras

France Queyras was born in Vancouver, British Columbia where she has studied photography and graphic design. In 1997 after being informed that her breast cancer had metastasized and that she probably only had two years to live she returned to her studies, enrolling in the Film/Video program at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, which she graduated from in May 2000. Her current art practice looks into the continued growth and acceptance of profit over people, wildlife and the environment.
France is interested in and explores collective memory. In her recent video "Body Burden" she offered the viewer a visual meditation narrated with personal facts and statistical information on chemical pollution in the environment, the narrative becomes our narrative, more about what is happening to us and the world we live in than one woman's life with metastatic breast cancer.
Her desire as a visual artist is to continue to challenge outdated world views. To inspire individuals to acknowledge their knowledge and to empower people to take action. Her latest and ongoing project which she began researching while taking action. Her latest and ongoing project which she began researching while taking part in the 'Discovery Residency" in Banff last fall, involves DNA monopolies, genetics and the ethics surrounding them.
