Born in Vienna, Barbara Prokop grew up in Vancouver and received a BFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montréal, in 1998. She spent two semesters at the Glasgow School of Art, in the Environmental Arts department, in 1998, where she started to work in video and photography. Since 1999, she has lived in Berlin, where in 2005 she completed postgraduate studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin, with Professor Katharina Sieverding, with her work titled: Artist looking for Americans who left the US because of current politics. Her solo work has been represented both in Canada and in Europe, with exhibitions such as: A Dinner Party for Sarah Smith at Saw Gallery in Ottawa, Britney: Still me at Articule in Montreal, I Wanna Be a Popstar at loop – raum für aktuelle kunst in Berlin, zeichen_leere at ngbk in Berlin, Absolute at Chiesa di San Carlo in Spoleto, Italy and Paradigmatika at Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, Austria. In 2006, she started collaborating with artist Niels Betori Diehl on projects that challenge power structures in the art world through working with other artist’s work in a type of “curatorial” practice, projects have included: Don’t worry about tomorrow at Basso in Berlin, Hardcore Glamour at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin and UEBERMODELS at PROGRAM | initiative for art + architecture collaborations in Berlin.
