Artist

Dawn Boyd

Throughout her life, Dawn Boyd has been many things. As a writer, illustrator, actor, commercial artist, animator, producer and director Boyd has achieved much acclaim from peers and press. Most recently winning 1st Place in Garrison Brewery’s Big Break Ad Challenge, The Atlantic Filmmaker’s Cooperative Award for Most Innovative Short Film, and The Atlantic Film Festival Award for Most Original Idea for ‘Heino’, an animated short featuring the travesties of German pop culture.

Much of Boyd’s work centers on satirizing contemporary pop culture, as in the monologue-driven ‘Don Cherry, I Hate You’, in which we hear the inner thoughts of Hockey Night in Canada’s Ron MacLean. Boyd’s work is fresh, funny, often dark, but always inspired.

Currently, Dawn is working with a variety of animation techniques, including stop-motion, live action, and combinations of illustration, sound, photography, live action, and 2-D animations. Her short film ‘Playing with Dolls’, in which she examines a childhood fear of toys coming to life, is now available through V-Tape, with more to come.

Boyd was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick and is currently residing in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley.

"The video art of Dawn Boyd revels in the personal, the diaristic, and the particular. Her viewpoint is ecstatically and unapologetically idiosyncratic; rooted to a time, a place, and a collection of people. Imagine a happy Nova Scotian, and wacky Nan Goldin wielding a videocamera, and you have the tabletop confessions of Dawn Boyd."
