Any While, Mean Time
Present Tense: contemporary project series NO.14 - Karma Clarke-Davis, 2000
Toronto: Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), 2000
Karma Clarke-Davis's video projection and mixed media installation, Any While, Mean Time, was exhibited at the AGO as part of the Present Tense series. The series was intended to offer a timely and intimate encounter with recent, contemporary works by both younger and more established artists. Clarke-Davis's piece represents a culmination of the artist's exploration of issues of alienation, intolerance and personal struggle. A narrative video and object components accompanying the piece interrupt the solemnity of the material and are poetic extensions of the main theme. The true magic of the powerful piece is the performance of the artist herself. She reveals her own internal conflicts and invites the viewer to undergo a similar self-investigation concerning the issues and themes presented.
