Garden of Earthy Delights

by Jayne Wark and James MacSwain

Matter/Flesh/Spirit/Ground: An overview of the video work of Wendy Geller, 2003, pp. 4-17

Halifax: the Centre for Art Tapes in partnership with Dalhousie Art Gallery, 2003

Author Jayne Wark looks at the work of Wendy Geller throughout her lifetime, after an introduction section. Interested in all mediums, Wark looks at the links between her graphic work and video as a way of telling stories and probing the irreconcilable differences that exist between words and images.

Wark also looks at the huge gap Geller finds between the glamour fantasy and the grim reality of makeovers and feminine beauty. Her work looks at how this gap comes from not only the inability to live up to the impposible ideals of perspective femininity, but from the extent to which that gap is an economic and material one. Geller's work seeks to expose how popular media glosses over such real representations of women.

Wark also looks at Geller's interest in body and nature through her use of distinct filmic devices and natural soundtracks.
