Encountering chinese Modernity in 'For Fun': An Interview with Ning Ying

by Xiaoping Li

CineAction, 1994, no. 33, pp. 43 - 52

Xiaoping Li looks at China's "new-wave" cinema and the sixth generation of filmmakers including Ning Ying, and Zhang Yuan. Li refers to Ying's film "For Fun" as a representation of China in a new light and talks with Ying about the social and cultural changes since the late 1970's and the difference between the fifth and six generation of filmmakers in China. Ying goes on to talk about her process as one that starts with a clear idea of what is to be communicated and how the maker relates to the characrers or the authors of the stories. Ying's films are focussed on the individuals which also includes communication amoung people and therefore the social and cultural envirnment that is evident through these individuals. Although Li and Ying speak in depth about the changing conditions in China over many generations "For Fun" portrays the idea that is not questioning young people's problems or old people's problems but human identity as a whole.
