Stories From a Generation: Early Video at the LA Women's Building

by Cecilia Dougherty

Afterimage, July 1998, v. 26, no. 1, pp. 8-11

The LA Women's Building was devoting a workspace for women who could create art in a non-competitive environment. Video was a popular medium there; by 1991 over 350 tapes of feminist video art had been produced starting from the very conception of video in the mid 70's.

Author Cecilia Dougherty writes about the early videotapes produced at the LA Women's Building, and where they fit in in the history of video art as a whole.

Dougherty outlines the history of both video art and the LA Women's Building, then goes into an in-depth discussion of the video works produced at the LA Women's Building in its founding years.
