Out of Beirut: Under the Volcano

by Christine Tohme

Artforum, Oct. 2006, v. 45, no. 2, p. 245

Tohme suggests that most people in Lebanon have never lived through a postwar period. The Home Works Forum on Cultural Practices, an arts conference, has been postponed the three times it has been held due to conflict. Art in Beirut is created in an unstable climate and video art thrived in this climate because it was accessible and immediate. Tohme discusses the artist group Ashkal Alwan and others formed in Beirut and their role in a process of constant rebuilding.
