Gillian Wearing: Brindley House (Ikon off-site project)

by Maria Walsh

Art Monthly, Oct. Fall 2006, no. 300, pp. 26-27

A review of Gillian Wearing's Family History (2006). The author describes how Wearing examines the loss of innocent viewing as it relates to documentary film and video making. The work presents a contemporary critique of the media's externalisation of subjectivity through the juxtoposition of two video installations in adjacent rooms, one featuring a large projection of a TV interview with Heather Wilkins (of the BBC's 1974 fly-on-the-wall series The Family), and the other showing a young Wearing lookalike watching The Family on a small monitor.
