Crossing Borders: Building Communities

by Shanti Thakur and Leith Hamilton

Clips, Apr. 1993, pp. 9-11

A 1991 shooting outside of the Black Community Council of Quebec (BCCQ) is portrayed negatively in the media. Shortly thereafter, video artist Shanti Thakur is approached by community activist Leith Hamilton to produce a video exploring the dynamics behind the relationships of the members of the BCCQ and its neighbours. Both the neighbours and BCCQ are given a chance to document their opinions and present them to the "other" community. From this, it is revealed that many involved needed to define their own community before they could consider their relationship with another. Upon completion, the video is distributed as an example of the need for alternative outlets for expression within small communities.
