Obomsawin: Film and song bridge cultures

Elaine O' Farrell reviews the work and career of native filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. Drawing deeply from her own heritage and childhood, Obomsawin constructs social and often political films that speak to the native experience in Canada. Obomsawin makes a concerted effort to have native people in her crew and despite the lack of exhibition her films receive she remains vigilant in her need to make what she believes to be important work for her community. Originally a singer and storyteller, Obomsawin is a member of of the National Film Board and the Order of Canada yet still remains active in the struggle for native women's rights.
