Marie Cieri’s article explores the video art of James Byrne, noting eight of Byrne’s films/ installations to display his progression over time with television as a medium. Through delving into Byrne’s works his staple interests with audience perception, the unique property of video and space are revealed. Along with Byrne’s growth and change in working with concepts of; passive versus active viewing, his own physical presence in film, personal subject matter and control over the ultimate meaning within his works.
