Juan Downey's recent videotapes

by Deirdre Boyle

Afterimage, Summer 1978, v. 6, no. 1&2, pp. 10-11

This article explores the imagery and video manipulation utilized by media artist: Juan Downey. His work encompasses his own personal journey and affliction to "his own third world". Process and experimentation guide his work, as well as his yearning to capture his own shadow, through traversing South America. He interweaves literary elements with visual and musical experiences. They are strong, poetic, overwhelming, compelling and ironic; stabbing the viewer, mocking their own perceptions and notions of the primitive, reality and culture. 'He exploits the value of repetition through two-channeled video', synching and delaying images, creating a new context for reinterpretation.
