Gunilla Josephson Artist-in-Residence: E.V.E. Absolute Matrix

by Sewil Otosed

Gunilla Josephson Artist-in-Residence, Apr. 4, 2009

Toronto: Trinity Square Video, 2009

In this exhibition catalog, Sewil Otosed assesses Gunilla Josephson’s E.V.E. Absolute Matrix, relating these video images of a woman to the media images of women. But unlike the familiar face of advertising, this one does not submit or become sexualized. Framing video as “fundamentally subversive” because of the difficulty with which it is controlled by industry or the official art world, Josephson sees it as necessarily female.
