Art with a 'Feminist Spin': Some publicly funded Calgary galleries make March their official fembo month

by Les Sillars

Alberta Report, May 1994, no. 403

Les Sillars reviews a month-long Calgary-wide feminist arts and media and discussion festival called The Feminist Spin, and in particular focuses on a particularly controversial show at The New Gallery, Fantasmagoria: Sexing the Lesbian Imagery, featuring six lesbian pornographic videos. Sillars contrasts this by mentioning patch work quilts on display at the Calgary YWCA Women's Resource Centre, stitched together by women in the YWCA programs. In between the two extremes of work part of Feminist Spin, Sillars also describes Mireille Person's multimedia installation, How Many Times...? and slides of Rita McKeough's performance art display from the previous year, both which showed at the Glenbow Museum. Sillars also touches on the fact that the month long festival is funded by various governmental arts organizations, and whether or not the affects the work in, or the intent of the festival.
