Politics of the Heart: Recognition of Homoparental Families

by Nancy Nicol

Florida Philosophical Review, Summer, v. 8, no. 1, pp. 140-156

Award winning video artist, documentary filmmaker and professor in time based art in the Department of Visual Arts at York University writes about the social movement in Quebec that led to the recognition of equal parenting rights for heterosexual and homosexual parents, drawing from research she did for her documentary film Politics of the Heart (2005).

The paper, as does the film, charts the incredible sea of change in opinion and legislation of homosexual partnerships and parenting, focusing roughly on the era between 1995 and 2005, and highlights several high profile legal cases, including Michael Hendricks and René LeBoeuf, the first homosexual couple to get married in Canada, and Mona Greenbaum and Nicole Paquette, the first couple to launch a lesbian mothers adoption case in Quebec.

Includes extensive bibliography and appendix.
