Long Beach: Going to a restaurant and eating the menu

by Melinda Wortz

Art News, Oct. 1975, v. 74, no. 8, p. 76

A review of a video art survey at the Long Beach Museum. The reviewer begins by writing about the odd and sometimes unpleasant sensation to viewing video in a museum context - akin to "going to a restaurant and eating the menu" - but credits the museum on its efforts to make the viewers comfortable. The show's curator, David Ross, maintains that Southern California has contributed significantly to the growth of video art, pointing to exhibitions of artists like Nauman, as well as the influential teachings of Wegman, Paik, and Baldessari in California. The reviewer discusses many of the videos in some detail, and praises the show for making accessible to all viewers a broad range of video work.
