In a queer country: gay and lesbian studies in the Canadian context

by John Corr

University of Toronto Quarterly, Jan. 2003, v. 72, no. 1

John Corr reviews the essay collection In a Queer Country: Gay and Lesbian Studies in the Canadian Context edited by Terry Goldie. The collection is an attempt to encounter the Canadian academe's failure to represent a richly diverse range of queer cultural practice across Canada. Goldie's interview with filmmaker Lynn Fernie of Forbidden Love: the Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives is one of the highlights which is the only time in the anthology a theorist-artist speaks directly. Despite showcasing the creative breadth of academic studies of Canadian gay and lesbian cultures, Goldie did not include any essays that focus on First Nation communities, as well as failed to posit a certain model of queer Canadian nationalism as he had intended in building this anthology.
