Reviews of a number of shows in New York and Paris. Joan Jonas uses performance intercut with excerpts from television which results in her playing multiple characters. Amy Greenfield choreographs violent dances for video. The author is surprised that the retrospective of image processed, documentary and performance tapes from the 1960s at P.S. 1 seem so much older than fifteen years and so steeped in psychedelic hippie culture. Wooster finds the character portrayals within Woody Vasulka's otherwise formalist The Commission to be the most engaging. John Walworth provides an elaborate living room installation within which to view a behind-the-scenes video that exposes the work behind the TV programme that would normally be the focus of the home-viewing environment. For Wooster, Nam June Paik's installation succeeds in conquering the busy space of the Georges Pompidou.
