TV Stories: The Adventures of Ilene Segalove

by Robin Reidy

Afterimage, Oct. 1986, v. 14, no. 3, pp. 4-5

An artist's biography of Ilene Segalove with special attention to her personal approach to video using her own mother as character and subjects. Her interest in television as a popular format that stands a metaphor for domestic space is traced to her participation in Telethon, an organization devoted to critique of communication media. She uses allusions to classic television formats like the educational program and the sitcom to produce parodies that interrogate issues from the domestic sphere of family and childhood to the political realm of capitalism and media conglomerates.
