Fun with Mythmaking: What General Idea taught us about Canadian art history

by Philip Monk

Canadian Art, Winter 2009, v. 26, no. 4, pp. 94-97

A short article that describes how the artist collective General Idea formed a kind of conceptual history of Canadian art through their work in FILE magazine. This article explores the idea that through the development of FILE magazine a context of Canadian art was established by Canadian artists. Issues of artist co-operation, archiving, and the balance of fact and fiction in the context of art production and art history discourse are mulled over through praise for General Idea's work.
