Video and Abstract Expressionism

by Hermine Freed

Arts Magazine, Dec. 1974, v. 49, no. 4, pp. 67-69

Hermine Freed suggests a lineage between video art and the two-dimensional movement of abstract expressionism, claiming both of these two things are in opposition to minimalism. Discussing her own work, along with that of Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra, Nancy Holt, Lynda Benglis, among others. The article offers a brief discussion regarding the development of video as it can be related to the existing arena of abstract expressionism: for example, things that video artists and abstract expressionist have in common is frustration with the limitations of time. The article is loose and suggestive, with interesting parallels in some instances.
