Candice Breitz: Same Same

by Nicholas Brown

Color, Winter 2009, v. 7, no. 5, pp. 38-39

Examining in Candice Breitz's video installations the powerful conveyance of self versus other and reality versus fiction, the author muses on three works displayed at the show Same Same. Though creative editing, Breitz uses the many rolls of Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep to engage a conversation with the actor's/actress' self. Similarly, Breitz interviews identical twins, separate, but dressed the same, to highlight differences in the 'same.' There is also the artist's lip-synced and acted repetition of the performance of actresses on an opposite monitor, a work that forces the viewer, like in the entire show, to actively question conceptions of identity and self awareness.
