Envisioning Communities
Afterimage, Apr. 1993, v. 20, no. 9, pp. 13-15
E. Deidre Pribram reviews the 1992 broadcast of the "Independent Images" series, an annual broadcast put together by PBS affiliate WHYY (Philadephia), that is dedicated to providing exposure for independent film- and videomakers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Content for Independent Images is assembled from work by independent artists, as well as work by participants of the Community Visions Project and workshops in video production organized by the Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia. Pribram highlights the documentary and experimental entries as the most successful pieces in the broadcast. These works range in subject from alternative portraits of working class individuals and historic or stereotyped communities, to women's outreach, to community media consumption. Pribram punctuates her review with dilemmas present in the series such as the lack of funding and greater institutional support, and an uneven representation of artists across levels and qualifying geographic regions.
