The Lives and Death of Carolee's Cats:Intimate Encounters, Gentle Transgressions and Incalculable Ethics

by Carla Benzan

C Magazine, Fall 2010, no. 107, pp. 6-11

The article discusses the historical associations with cats as symbols of female sexuality and power with references to Carolee Schneemann's videotapes. Schneemann navigates the terrain of representation without any subeversive irony that dominates much contemporary animal art. The imbircation of animals and humans in life and in death is not only represented to the viewer, it is lived by the artist and her companions. The article also refers to writings of Judith Butler, Derrida and Chole Taylor.
