Eight Pieces by Dan Graham: 1966-72

by Dan Graham

Studio International, 1972, v. 183, no. 944, pp. 210-213

This article by Graham describes eight of his works between the years 1966 and 1972, all of which (with the exception of Body Press) were presented at the Lisson Gallery in March 1972. Each work, adopting performative strategies, analyzes the multi-dimensional, multi-spatial, reflexive relationship of performer to camera, monitor, and live witness. Graham makes evident the complexities of the 'self', eg. the present self vs. recorded self. The subjectiveness of perception lies at the roots of Graham's work, with the work's realization depedent on reception.
