From Portapak to Camcorder: A Brief History of Guerilla Television

This article chronicles the rebellion and resistance of underground video, guerilla television and community video against the corruption and commercialization of broadcast television. New York City became the hub of underground video and media resistance, artists and documentarians produced videos in the genres of process art, earth art, conceptual art and performance art. Filmmakers captured the tension and anxiety surrounding the political and social circumstances of the 1960s. Artists and documentarians alike filmed social protests regarding issues such as wars, nuclear weapons, environmental catastrophes, women rights and poverty.
