by James D Campbell

Border Crossings, Mar. 2010, no. 113, pp. 95-96

This article discusses Tacita Dean's Merce Cunningham performs STILLNESS (in three movements) to John Cage's composition 4'33" with Trevor Carlson, New York City, 28 April 2007, a six-film projection. Dean requested that Cunningham create and perform choreography to Cage's famously silent musical piece, and then filmed the performance. The resulting artwork deals with the bodily experience of silence and loss.
