Real Vlogs: The Rules and Meanings of Online Personal Videos

by Jean Christian Aymar

First Monday, Nov. 2009, v. 14, no. 11-2, pp. 1-12

This paper explores the rules of vlogging: the visual and social practices identified by viewers and creators in relation to notions of authenticity and inauthenticity on YouTube. Aymar focuses on the lonelygirl15 scandal in 2006, in which a popular video blogger was revealed to be an actress with a team of directors, writers and editors producing her videos. He looks at notions of performance, confession, and banality in relation to authenticity in video blogs.
