Girl Talk

Afterimage, Mar. 2011, v. 38, no. 5, pp. 22-23

Jody Cutler summarizes Jessica Ann Peavy's first solo exhibition in Manhattan. The title series is comprised of four wall-sized projected pieces in which women of colour deliver monologues about their issues with men. The women all wear little black dresses and lie on patterened couches, suggesting therapy sessions and studio portraiture. All of the monologues are delivered simultaneously and are thus largely incoherent and incomprehensible to the viewer who is only able to decipher occasional phrases. Peavy's videos function as feminist confessionals which simultaneously invite and refuse the white male gaze.
