Hot Vlog!

by Danielle Digiacomo

The Independent, Mar. 2006, v. 29, no. 2, pp. 31-34

In this article, Digiacomo describes the emerging artistic phenomenon of the video blog (vlog) and some of the early, female pioneers of the medium. Written in March 2006, before the widespread popularization of YouTube, the artists Digiacomo features post their videos on sites like www.ourmedia.org and http://blip.tv. Vloggers Ryanne Hodson, Zadi Diaz and Charlene Rule were drawn to vlogging due to its inherently interactive nature and accessibility. Rule argues that the vlogosphere fosters a type of open artistic experimentation that the film industry does not. Additionally, unlike much avant-garde art, video blogs involve rather than alienate the viewer. Video blogger Mclaughlin argues that the video blog is responding to a deep cultural need to participate in the creation of entertainment. Digiacomo predicts that the vlog will continue to be an important space for accessible creativity and experimentation. She points to copyright laws as one main barrier vloggers will have to overcome and cautions against the entanglement of video blogs and profit motive.
