Between Cinema and a Hard Place: Gary Hill's Video Art Between Words and Images
Criticism, Winter 2003, v. 45, no. 1, pp. 108-127
Through a close analytical look at a single installation by Gary Hill, Between Cinema and a Hard Place, the author tries to find answers to questions of aesthetic, as well as technological boundaries of video art. He argues that Hill's video language, coming both from visual as well as non-visual artistic fields -- philosophy, poetry, television and film -- allows video art to transcend the normative classifications of art history.
