Sky Projectors, Portapaks, and Projection Bombing: The Rise of a Portable Projection Medium

Starting with Michel Verne's 1889 short story, "In the Year 2889," Abigail Susik explores the history of projections as art. She looks at the interlacing of video and projection art within art history, defining the invention of the Sony Portapak as a key moment. Going through the many technological advancements within the projection medium, she gives a survey of this unconventional practice that goes beyond the gallery walls.
