Experimental Ethnography: The Work of Film in the Age of Video
Canadian Journal of Film Studies, Spring 2000, v. 9, no. 1
According to Scott MacDonald, the current academia is concerned primarily with the written discourse about film/video, while avoiding to consider film/video practice (exhibition and distribution). Moreover, the exploration of ethnographic documentary has been particularly neglected within the "mainstream" academic study of film and media. In his review/essay, the author suggests that the book by Catherine Russel, Experimental Ethnography: The Work of Film in the Age of Video, which is devoted entirely to the study of alternative forms of film, could offer valuable insight into the neglected forms of film and video practice.
