MOUNIRA AL-SOLH: The Ventriloquist's Humor

by Nat Muller

ArtAsiaPacific, Mar. 2012, no. 77, pp. 64-65

Examines the "politics of representation" in the humorous video works of Lebanese artist Mounira al-Sohl. Highlighted is the technique of "ventriloquism" in al-Sohl's videos: e.g., her voice-dubbing for male documentary subjects, and anthropomorphic performances of animals. A range of comic approaches to the political and the everyday are evaluated in several of al-Sohl's pieces.
