On-Line Simulations/Real-Life Politics: A Discussion with Ricardo Dominguez on Staging Virtual Theatre

by Coco Fusco and Ricardo Dominguez

The Drama Review, Summer 2003, v. 47, no. 2, pp. 151-162

Coco Fusco and collaborator Ricardo Dominguez discuss the use of Latin American Electronic Disturbance Theatre actions (EDT) as a mechanism through which the Internet becomes a "decisive zone to articulate what is most needed by those who have the least in the 21st century" (151-2). Fusco and Dominguez propose that EDT uses interactive performance and virtual theatre as a form of electronic civil disobedience. As an example of EDT Fusco and Dominguez discuss their collaborative performance Dolores from 10 to 22 performance based on a true story of a Mexican maquiladora worker accused of trying to start a union and locked into a room for 12 hours to intimidate her into signing a letter of resignation. Performed as a 12 hour durational performance Dolores was filmed via surveilance cameras.
