Oh, Canada Amalie Atkins

by Leah Taylor

BlackFlash Magazine, Sept. 2012, v. 29, no. 3, pp. 10-13

This article discusses the Oh, Canada exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) which showcased over 60 artists selected from across Canada by curator Denise Markonish. Taylor discusses the work of film/video/textile artist Amalie Atkins, who was chosen by Markonish for much of the exhibition’s visual branding. Atkins’ piece selected, Three Minute Miracle: Tracking the Wolf (2008), features a video installed within a white circular felted tent. Taylor describes the work, which also included an audience participation performance, as having the ability to transport the viewer to a cold winter’s day on the Saskatchewan prairie. Taylor frames the work has being reminiscent of fairy and folk tales, playing with the idea of childhood memory.
