My Night with Marina

by Jackson Klie

Carbon Paper, Dec. 2013, pp. 17-18

Jackson Klile recalls his experience with the trial run of the Marina Abramovic Institute in Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods. The institution, destined for Hudson NY, will serve as a living archive for Abramovic's work, showcasing her unique performance methodology. Dressed in futuristic lab gear and instructed by the disembodied voice of Abramovic herself piping in through their personal headphones, participants proceed through various chambers including the Water Drinking Chamber, Eye Gazing Chamber, Electricity Chamber, and Luminosity Chamber, ending with the final chamber with a written reflection on their experience. This work of a minimalist aesthetic is extremely dependent on individual experience that seeks, and in Klile's opinion achieves, a focus on the present.
