Obscurity and Stillness:: Potentiality in the Moving Image
Art Journal, 2013, pp. 64-79
Author Catherine Fowler discusses the work of various artists, including David Claerbout, Tacita Dean and Anri Sala, suggesting that while their work, which often favours "bare reality" and the single long shot, is reminiscent of early cinema, these videos, in fact, are more closely related to what she calls a "post-cinema potentiality". As opposed to using the term "actuality", as is used in relation to the early cinema, "potentiality", she proposes, better reflects the passage of the moving image from analogue to digital, as well as the way film and video deals addresses the experience of time.
