Vampire Video: Time in the Art of Aida Ruilova

by Barry Schwabsky

Afterall, Spring 2006, no. 13, pp. 65-71

The author praises Ruilova's work, while placing it within a historical context of video art. Video art is described as often being about real time, allowing the viewer to watch it passing. However, Ruilova subverts that idea by including rapid editing into her videos, resulting in second-long shots which still do not disrupt the video-specific temporality; while the actual time is short, the videos often seem to take much longer!
