The Success of Failure

by Anonymous

Border Crossings, Mar. 2013, v. 32, no. 1, p. 19

This anonymously authored article is a short exploration of multi-media artist Divya Mehra's work. Mehra works with humour to explore issues of race, as in, for example, her video piece The Importance of Being Earnest, in which an ideal scene turns to pictures of horror as Mehra herself lip-synchs along to the Aladdin song, "A Whole New World." Mehra was chosen as one of five artists to contribute to the Art Breaks program, which is curated by Creative Time and MoMA PS1. Mehra created a 23-second video titled On Tragedy (Did you hear the one about the Indian?), in which she once again uses humour, which might even be described as slapstick, to address the issue of failure - a common theme in her work.
