Vera Frenkel: Protean Sites and Sightings
Border Crossings, June 2014, v. 33, no. 2, pp. 56-64
German art book publisher Hatje Cantz published a Vera Frenkel monograph in 2013 and article author Gary Michael Dault uses this book as a spring board from which to explore Frenkel's work. Dault asserts that Frenkel's work is protean, palimpsestic and challenging, and explains that the major themes of Frenkel's works are: identity, migration, transition, translation and cultural displacement. The article traces the ten essays on Frenkel that were published in the new monograph of her work, citing and exploring a number of her video pieces along the way, including String Games, This is Your Messiah Speaking, Body Missing, The Institute TM, Once Near Water: Notes from the Scaffolding Archive, and The Blue Train.
