Video as Art
Journal of Film and Video, 1984, v. 36, no. 1, pp. 36-41
Bill Viola, a leading figure in video and new media art, expresses his vision for the future of video art in this article. Viola primarily analyzes the characteristics of avant-garde and mass media video, considering various ways that the two forms relate to each other. Ultimately he argues that while video artists have never achieved personal success in the mass media, their technical and artistic innovations have had an influence on such formats as cable TV. He concludes by celebrating the increasing convergence of art and communications media.
