Recycled Cinema as Material Ecology: Raphael Montañez Ortiz's Found-Footage Films and Computer-Laser-Video

by Susan Jarosi

Screen, 2012, v. 53, no. 3, pp. 228-245

ISSN 0036-9543

Susan Jarosi looks at the found-footage films and "Computer-Laser-Videos" by artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz as exemplary of the potential to expose networks of use and reuse and to put pressure on notions of material value, waste, abjection, redemption, and change.

Making the case that found-footage films can be understood as an act of recycling, Jarosi works out the ways in which the retrieval of past images is an ecological practice aimed at making forgotten images useful again.
