Video Past and Present:: Three Perspectives

by Andrea Carson

Poolside, 2003, pp. 32-43

Wnnipeg: Video Pool Inc., 2003

A review of an exhibition Video Acts: single channel works from the collections of Pamela and Richard Kramlich and New Art Trust in London. The author celebrates the Canadian video art shown at London's Institute of Contemporary Art, the South London Gallery and the Canadian High Commission.

The author, Andrea Carson, explores the idea that artists use the video camera as an extension of the eye. Despite a post-modern awareness of 'cinematic trickery,' Carson suggests that viewers still tend to accept moving images as real, and this tendency allows video artists to alter perceptions and engage the viewer. Carson also notes the relationship between visual and aural in recent video work.
