Disobedient Video in France in the 1970's: Video Production by Women's Collectives

by Stéphanie Jeanjean

Afterall, Summer 2011, no. 27

Stéphanie Jeanjean charts how the emergence of the video camera in France during the 70s was quickly adopted by feminist collectives. The use of this new technology is put in relation with May 68' and second-wave feminism. The work produced by these collectives is seen as a militant practice that fought against women's seclusion and misinformation in the pursuit of emancipation.
