Miroslaw Balka: apple T.

by Claire Flannery

Moving Image Review & Art Journal (MIRAJ), 2012, v. 1, no. 1, pp. 111-114

A review of apple T., a video work by artist Miroslaw Balka in Dublin's Douglas Hyde Gallery. The author notes Balka's subversive attitude and theatrical materials and techniques. The subject of the piece is an apple tree outside of Treblinka, a former Nazi concentration camp in Poland. The twisting and turning motion of the camera movements over the apples plays with the collective Christian myth of the apple. But according to Balka the work is about 'being' rather than the Holocaust.
